Nusa Penida is a separate island south-east of Bali, reached by fast boat. Its west-coast cliffs and viewpoints are among the most filmed places in Indonesia. It is a long, physical day: a sea crossing, steep and narrow roads, and cliff paths. Boats may be cancelled when the sea is rough, so plans stay flexible.

Mount Batur is an active volcano in Bali's Kintamani highlands, climbed in the dark to reach the summit area for sunrise over the caldera lake. Ubud is green, inland and cooler in the evening. Uluwatu and the Bukit peninsula are dry limestone cliffs above surf breaks. Canggu is cafés and beach sunsets. Nusa Penida is a separate island reached by boat. Kintamani sits on the rim of the Batur caldera.

How long do transfers take?

Plan on slow roads. Moving between Ubud and Uluwatu can take well over an hour and much longer in traffic, so programmes group days by area rather than crossing the island twice.
