Mount Batur and Kintamani
Mount Batur is an active volcano in Bali's Kintamani highlands, climbed in the dark to reach the summit area for sunrise over the caldera lake. Treks run with local guides and start in the small hours, so pick-ups from Ubud or the south are very early. It suits adventure content and needs reasonable fitness.

How does the trek work?
You are collected in the middle of the night, meet your local guide at the base and climb by headtorch on loose volcanic ground. Treks on Batur are run with local guides, and we do not arrange unguided climbs.
What should I bring?
- Proper walking shoes with grip; the descent on loose scree is the harder part
- A warm layer: the summit is cold before sunrise
- A headtorch and spare batteries for your camera
- Water, and a rain layer in the wet season
What if the weather is bad?
Cloud can hide the sunrise even in the dry season, and the guides may shorten or cancel the climb in heavy rain or if volcanic activity raises the alert level. We follow their call.
